Accommodations

Updates: Wed Sep 18 10:19:24 PDT 2002
  • Anybody who is not staying in Tiburon and expects to have transportation provided for them needs to contact vcs@sfsu.edu immediately, saying which of the hotels.
  • Anyone looking for a roommate to share the cost of accomodations at the Tiburon Lodage should contact the AMTA Registrar as soon as possible.
  • We make no guarantees about providing transportation from outlying hotels for anyone registering after September 26.

AMTA is pleased to announce the site of its next biennial conference: AMTA-2002 will take place in the second week of October at the Tiburon Lodge, situated in the picturesque town of the same name, about 30 miles north (and just across the Bay) from San Francisco. For a glimpse of the hotel and the beautiful surroundings, you can check out the Lodge's Web site at http://www.tiburonlodge.com.

Lodging

Unfortunately, like about everything else in the San Francisco Bay Area, lodging is expensive. In the Tiburon area it is also limited and Tiburon and the area surrounding it is a favorite spot for weekend getaways. It is strongly recommended that people attending the conference book NOW. The less expensive places are already partially full. The prices below do not include an additional 10% occupancy tax.

Tiburon

In Tiburon there are 2 hotels and several restaurants. The town is very small, so everything is within walking distance.

This is a "boutique" hotel with only 15 rooms right on the Tiburon shore with San Francisco views.

Nearby Highway Exits

Hotels listed in this section are approximately 5-6 miles from the town center and the conference site.

The closest exit is Seminary Drive, with hotels on both sides of the freeway. All hotels are within walking distance of restaurants and a shopping center. Available restaurants in the area are: Indian, Japanese, Italian, Chinese, Thai, light Mexican, regular Mexican and, of course, a Starbuck's.

Tamalpais Motel (Seminary Drive Exit):

680 Redwood Highway, Mill Valley, CA. 94941
Phone: (415) 381-4775, Fax: (415) 389-6462
Seminary Drive exit off Hwy 101 (practically at Tiburon Boulevard exit)
A small decent motel with approximately 20 rooms, some of which are permanently inhabited. Only 12-15 rooms are generally, and currently only 5 are unbooked. Very close to restaurants and shopping center. The manager quoted the following rates but did not wish to make any guarantees or allocate a block of rooms:
Monday-Thursday, Sunday: $59 single, $69 double
Friday and Saturday: $69 single, $79 double
(prices do not include 10% occupancy tax)

Mill Valley/Sausalito Travel Lodge (Seminary Drive Exit):

707 Redwood Highway, Mill Valley, CA. 94941

Double occupancy: $89 double+double
(prices do not include 10% occupancy tax)
Hotel capacity is 50 rooms. They will not block out rooms for us.
This is a AAA recommended hotel. The rooms are not very big but they are nice.

The Aqua Hotel

555 Redwood Highway, Mill Valley, CA 94941

Regular Prices: $160 Deluxe King/Deluxe Queen/Queen; $175-$195 Junior Suites
(prices do not include 10% occupancy tax)
Capacity is 50 guestrooms including 25 junior suites.
This is another "boutique" hotel managed by the same company that manages the Waters Edge Hotel.
Still working on getting better rates and the ones listed above may be out of date.

Both the Travel Lodge and the Aqua are located on the shore of a water wild-life preserve (a branch of the San Francisco Bay). There is a multi-use path over and around the preserve. The next closest exit is the exit for Highway 1, about 1/2 mile south of Seminary Drive. Restaurants in this area include: the Buckeye Roadhouse (American smokehouse fare), the Dipsea Cafe (a coffe house popular with joggers), and the Frantoio, a well-reviewed Northern Italian restaurant that gets full marks in Zagat's 2002 of Bay Area restaurants. The hotels include:

Fountain Motel

155 Shoreline Highway, Mill Valley, CA 94941
Phone: (415) 332-1732, Fax: (415) 332-0656
Another small apparently decent motel with 27 rooms. The manager quoted the following rates but did not wish to make any guarantees or allocate a block of rooms:
$69 single (queen bed), $79 double (2 queens) 27 rooms.

Holiday Inn Express

160 Shoreline Highway, Mill Valley, CA 94941
Phone: (415) 332-5700 Fax: (415) 331-1859

Continental breakfast included.
We have 10 rooms with one king bed and 5 rooms with two double beds reserved.
Block reservations and preferred rates expire on September 26th, 2002.

Other Options for Lodging

One thing to watch out for in San Francisco and the Bay Area in general is that things can change very fast and within very short distances. For example the Fireside Motel, located next to the Fountain Motel is explicitly NOT recommended. There have been several reports of criminal activity at the hotel. In addition, it is overpriced, shabby and generally uninviting. There is a similar Motel 6 in the Corte Madera Exit (north of the Tiburon Boulevard exit). You wouldn't think so from the prices, but $85 per night in this area can buy you a smelly unclean room just because of the location.

Other options for lodging include downtown Mill Valley (west and south of Tiburon), Sausalito (nearest town to the south), and downtown San Francisco. However if you choose to stay in these or other locations, you will need your own car. Downtown San Francisco and Tiburon are linked by both bus and ferry service, but these services are oriented towards commuter traffic into San Francisco. You would be doing the reverse commute for which there is virtually no support. For accommodations in San Francisco, please refer to any visitor's guide. In Mill Valley the following web page lists accommodations, including some of the hotels described above. http://www.millvalley.org/accommodations1.html. Sausalito's accommodations are listed at: http://www.ci.sausalito.ca.us/vis-info/hotels.htm
